I am proud of the accomplishments that I have helped our schools achieve. Just during the last 4 years, I led the board as its chairman for 2 years to hire an excellent new superintendent, implement full Mondays at all of our elementary schools, and bring reasonable reforms to student disciplinary system and later high school start times for high schools from this September. The level of academic achievement has been going up every year, not just for the high achievers but for everyone. The minority achievement gap has been narrowing. The graduation rate is high.
Vision for the Future
What is so remarkable is that we have been able to accomplish all these in spite of the tough budgets. Of course, our system is by no means perfect and there is still work to be done. I want to continue improving our operational efficiency. We need to find ways to support our teachers better; solve the digital-divide problems among the students; help our students acquire the 21st century skills; continue keeping schools safe; reduce large class sizes; and, improve the school buildings. I want to remain as part of the team to work on these.
Ilryong Knows About Education
When he immigrated to the United States in 1974, he had to repeat the 10th grade due to difficulty with the English Language. After graduating from T.C. Williams High School in 1977, Ilryong went on to graduate from Harvard University, and is now a partner in a successful law practice in Annandale.
As a product of public schools, Ilryong knows first-hand just how much a quality public education can mean for the success of today's youth.
During his 16-year tenure in office as a school board member, he's overseen much needed improvements and continuous advancement in this world-class school system — one of the country’s best.
As the father of two graduates in Fairfax County public schools, he is also a former ESL student who believes that excellent education should be available to all.
